2010 Summer Art Program
"Peace of the Earth" Weaving
"Peace of the Earth" Weaving
Primary Children 3-5 yrs
Elementary Children 6-9 yrs
Monday - Friday
Half Day 9-12
Full Day 9-3:30
The curriculum this year will be textiles and weaving. Each day will include
lessons & materials for children to explore color, painting and sculpture. In keeping with last years practice and theme of using natural resources wisely, we will continue to explore ways of being green as we design and construct a giant loom in the shape of a peace sign. Coming together as a community, they will begin to weave natural and artificial materials through the loom sections to create a "Peace Of The Earth". We hope to display our finished project at the Trip hammer Mall as in previous years with "Rodney The Recycle Rooster" The children will also have an opportunity to explore all the mediums from previous years such as painting and murals, mosaics, sculpture and architecture landscapes. Lessons on drawing techniques and visualizing shape, form, and color will be given throughout the program. Activities will include preparing materials, creative design, gardening and blending in music, movement, yoga and cultural elements to foster each child's unique imagination.

From the Director
Having a customized art program in a Montessori school that is consistent with the core learning program enhances the development of the whole child. Visual arts can be thought of as a type of language. As the child learns this language the door to creative expression is opened. Through creating the child will reveal himself. The language of visual art is made up of line, shape, color, and composition in much the same ways that written language is made up of letters, words, sentences, and paragraphs. However, unlike written language, visuals arts are highly subjective in nature and symbols may have different meanings to each person who views them. Therefore, the challenge of the educator is to help the child find verbal expression for an essentially non-verbal impression or experience. Hands on art making experiences help develop the child’s imagination, emotions, intuition and intellect.
Through the intimate supportive learning environment of a Montessori classroom, the child learns trust and respect for the teachers and his classmates. There he is encouraged to notice, discuss and interpret what he sees and expresses. Many a child has an in-depth imaginative story behind what appears to be random scribbles. With practice, he learns to unlock and master the techniques of artistic language. It becomes an invaluable gift to finally discover a vehicle to communicate all that is inside of him. This process can be the root of both academic and aesthetic education for the child.
